Nordisk Selskap: Konferansar og seminar

Styret i det nordiske Selskapet hadde møte i Oslo 17 april. Mellom dei sakene som vart diskutert der var:

Den 3. Nordiske Midtausten-konferanse, som altså blir i Joensuu neste sommar. Temaet for konferansen blir: "Etnisk møte og kulturell endring". Det passar inn med Joensuu-festivalens generelle tema om "Migrasjon og kulturmøte". Vår tanke er altså forandring i kultur (og samfunn) som følge av møte mellom etnisitetar og migrasjon.

Men, som vanlig, så kan naturligvis alle bidra med det som dei ønskar. Vi vil sende ut Call for papers om ikkje lenge. Folk blir også bedt om å foreslå tema for grupper/workshops, men denne gongen vil gjerne ha fullstendige forslag med minst tre innlegg, ikkje berre ideen til ein tittel. Joensuu-festivalen finansierer innbyding av trulig to inviterte foredragshaldarar frå Midtausten. Vi kjem tilbake til namn når vi har dei klare. Vi vil også prøve å invitere noen kolleger frå St. Petersburg til å delta på konferansen. Forøvrig vil inkorporeringa i den store festivalen bety at noen av konferanseinnlegga vil gå i plenum, opne for allmennheita, mens det meste av arbeidet vil gå i workshops berre for konferansedeltakarane, som vanlig. Arrangørane lover bedre hotellstandard enn den vi hadde i København. Det blir også arbeidd med ekskursjonar til interessante intellektuelle senter i nærheita, og kulturfestivalen vil legge ei aktiv og festlig ramme for konferansen. Så det kan bli bra.

Maghreb-workshop. Den vil trulig bli arrangert i vårsemesteret 1995, i Uppsala. Temaet blir "Historical Identity in the Maghreb"; igjen ei open formulering. Vi håpar dei som er interessert i Maghreb vil kunne delta. Vi reknar med ca. 20 deltakarar frå Norden, og ca 10 frå ulike Maghreb-land, og noen frå Europa. Afrika-institutet i Uppsala vil stå for det praktiske, saman med Universitetet.

Dissertation workshop i Aix. Vi noterte oss at Nordisk Forskingsakademi ikkje ville støtte denne. Dersom dei skifter meining, vil vi kunne arrangere denne med eit halvårs forsinking (altså også denne våren 1995); i motsatt fall blir ideen utsatt til etter Joensuu-konferansen.

Minoritetar i midtausten. Arbeidet er i gang med denne, i Lund. Det er altså eit svensk seminar, med det Nordiske Selskapet som formell (med)arrangør, og der alle våre medlemmer er inviterte til å delta. Meir detaljar kjem når vi veit meir.

Rapportert på møtet vart også noen aktivitetar i ulike stader. Nemnas kan:

  • To bøker frå Joensuu, det første eit konferanse-volum om Westermarck, og M. Sabour (ed.): Perspectives in Development. Voices from the South (Joensuu UP 1994) som har fleire artiklar om Midtausten.

  • Tampere rapporterte ein stor suksess for det store Egypt-utstillinga, som i omfang og kvalitet kan måle seg Syria-utstillinga i Paris nylig.

  • I Helsinki har Jaako Hämeen-Anttila forsvart den første doktorgrad i arabiske studiar på over tretti år (om "Lexical ibdal"). Den neste vil følge snart; Irmelin Perho's avhandlig om Profetens medisin er akseptert til forsvar.

  • Det kgl. Bibliotek i København vil plassere Midtausten-samlingane i eit nytt hus som skal stå ferdig i 1997. I 1996 skal det arrangeras ein stor utstilling om den islamske verda, basert berre på materiale i Danmark. Forskarar i København og Århus samarbeider om det faglige.

  • Oslo har nå fått grunnfag i persisk, det første i Norge, og har nå undervisning i alle fire Midtaust-språk, arabisk, tyrkisk, persisk og hebraisk.

  • Bergen rapporterte to doktorgradar, Gunnar Sørbø (antropologi, irrigasjon) og Endre Stiansen (historie, handelsmenn i Sør-Sudan).

  • Frå Sverige vart rapportert eit nytt nr. av tidsskriftet Orientalia Suecana, der mange av våre medlemmer er aktive.

    Medieval Encounters is intended as a cross-cultural, cross- disciplinary forum for discussion among scholars and students around the world about the intersections and interactions of Jewish, Christian and Muslim culture in the period from the fourth through the fifteenth centuries C.E. The subjects covered are culture in its widest definition, including History, Languages, Literature, Medicine, Music, Philosophy, Religion, Science, and Art.

    Russia: Monuments of the Medieval Orient

    The History Department, the Institute of Oriental Studies and the Orientalists' Society of the Russian Academy of Sciences are holding an International Conference in Moscow on the 7-11th February 1995 under the title 'The Spiritual, Material and Written Monuments of Ancient and Mediaeval Orient (the Problems of Database Creation)'.

    The list of themes embraces the historical period from archaic times to the 18th century A.D. It may be connected with the nations, cultures, ethnoses and persons of Asia and Eastern Europe (in connection with Asia).

    The Organizing Committee of the Conference asks you to send your claim and abstract of your report not later than the 1st July 1994. You can also propose a special topic of a seminar or discussion. In this case we ask you to give us the names of participats who in your opinion will be interested in proposed topic.
