We have collected here various freeware and shareware software items related to Arabic on Macintosh. They are all Macintosh programs only; nothing here will work on Intel-based PCs or other machines. All programs are to be used only as specified by the licence agreement. For shareware, please be solidaric and pay your shareware fee - in that way we can induce the authors to continue providing useful software on the net.

The items here are divided into two major groups: those related to the Arabic script on the Mac, and those related to transcription of Arabic, Persian and Turkish in Roman (English) letters; the Jaghbub package. [Click on each for further information about these items].

Arabic script

These files are Apple's resources for the 7.0.1 system, originally stored on ftp.apple.com. Copyright and everything belongs to Apple, of course.

The ArabicPackage contains all the resources for turning Mac Arabic, including TrueType fonts and the LKE and ScriptSwitcher extensions (358K).
ArabicResources contains just the minimal resources for Arabizng the Mac, with bitmaps only. Choose this and the ArabicPS files if you want PostScript rather than TrueType fonts (92K).
ArabicTrueType contains the four basic Arabic fonts in TrueType format (not bitmaps. 196K).
ArabicPS contains the four basic Arabic fonts in PostScript format (not bitmaps. 134K).
The Language Kit Extension on its own (78K).
The ScriptSwitcher extension on its own (44K).
The extension to correct the LC475 bug (22K).
The hacked British System 6.07 with Arabic resources (590K).

Kaatib10. This and the following translate old al-Kaatib files to the Mac Arabic system (28K). Check the Kaatib page.

8859-1-6. This and the following translates Arabic files you may have received by e-mail to proper Arabic (26K). Check the E-mail page.

Here are some shareware wordprocessors / text editors that work with Arabic, as well as a couple of other useful small programs.

WordSolution (276K).
muEdit (52K).
Tex-Edit Plus (222K).
Minaret is a program to calculate prayer times; but also translates dates between Hijra and CE calendar (58K).
Taqwim is another calendar program(42K).

Jaghbub

These are all fonts made by me on the basis of standard Mac fonts for writing full transliteration in English script. Read the Jaghbub page for details. These are all in TrueType (or bitmaps only) format. If you own Adobe Type Manager, you may also freely receive the Postscript versions from me.

The JaghbubPackage contains all the seven fonts as well as the UK and US keyboard files (658K).
Jaghbub contains only the Jaghbub font proper (vs. 4.1) and the US keyboard file (296K).
Bairut (116K).
Koufra (240K).
Jaghbub.related. The four bitmaps only fonts, Courier, New York, Geneva, Monaco D (62K).
jaghbub.xtras Various tools and toys related to the Jaghbub fonts (78K).
keyboards contains the US, UK, French, German and Danish keyboards files only (28K).
LCdiacs makes the LC codes (e.g. of text captures from the Melvyl catalogue) into Jaghbub diacritics (26K).
RemoveDiacs removes the Jaghbub diacritics from a text file (26K).
